Dog-days are supposed to begin today—whatever they are. Anyway, they are supposed to last from about July 3 to about August IT.
When I was a youngster there used be all kinds of tales alrout DogDays: if you go in swimming too much, you’ll have sores; if you don't wear your shoes, you’ll have grounditch. Also, if it rains the first day of Dog-Days, it will rain for all 4j) of them; of if it is dry the first day, then there will be 40 dry days. I’ve forgotten dozens of the tales about this season.
Somewhere along the line I’ve also heen vtold that the Dog-Days were named by the ancients on the theory that midsummer heat is partly caused by Sirius, the Greater Dog-Star (or maybe it was Procyon, the Lesser Dog-Star, I can’t remember -which) because these stars rise pTactically with the sun around this time of year and are supposed to add to its general warmth. Maybe 50; I’ll not argue the question—hut, the encyclopedia says Sirius is 8.S light years away from the earth and Procyon i* soil farther, and it’s pretty hard to see bow that could ra:sc the temperature. (Something does raise thet temperature at time, though, as we’ve discovered of late.)
