Peach Crop Starts
Moving To Market
The first of Virginia’s early peaches started .moving to market last week, and all indications were for a large crop of good quality.
Fred Dreiling, associate horticulturisl at JVFIj Says most of the early peaches are coming from orchards in the Northern Neck and south central areas. The Early-Red-Fre variety, which gained much popularity on the market, is the heaviest among the early shipments.
The next variety moving into Virginia markets will be Red Haven, coming largely from the eastern area.
A( crop of over 2,000,000 bushels is expected in Virginia this year. This will be above the average of the past few years. Last year’s crop was about 1,750,000 bushels.
Dreiling says the peach crop is clean this year, and that insects have been kept under control.
Early varieties from North and South Carolina have been coming into the market for the last several weeks.
