George C. Herring, animal husbandman at VPI, says the gross income from cattle, sheep, and hogs reached the record figure of $120,239,000, up 24 per cent from 1950. The highest previous figure was $110,729,000 in 1948. ^4- Cattle and calves produced the largest source of income among meat animals, with 484,000 head yielding 203,730,000 pounds live weight. They grossed $62,926,000, as compared with $48,729,000 in 1950. The average price of cattle was 28.4 cents per pound; of calves 35.3 cents per pound. High prices in 1951 played an important part in the large —income from cattle and calves, although numbers and production have been moving upward for several years.
