Because of the many reckless and Inaccurate statements being made by Senator Byrd’s opponents concerning his farm record, it is necessary to set forth the facts clearly and truthfully
The completely false statement has been made and continually repeated that Senator Byrd voted against the bill which established the Agricultural Adjustment Act.
The fact is that Senator Byrd strongly supported the AAA This bill, House Bill 8505, passed the Senate February 14, 1038 and Senator Byrd’s support of this bill is shown in the Congressional Record, Volume 83, Part II, pages 1881 and 1882.
Likewise completely false Is the assertion that Senator Byrd hfis opposed the Rural Electrification Program.
The facts are that Senator Byrd has been a strong and determined supporter of the REA. He supported the REA Act of May 20, 1936; the Reorganization Plan 11, July 1, 1939; the REA Loan Liberalizing Act, September 21, 1944; and the REA Rural Telephone Service Act, October 28, 1949. In addition, he has approved thirty appropriation bills in which funds were made available to the REA.
Senator Byrd, a farmer himself, has fought the battles ol ■ the farmer from the time he entered public life 37 years ago.
But more Important than this is Senator Byrd’s record for Americans as a whole. Bernard M. Baruch said: “1 think there is no man in Congress who exceeds Harry Byrd in Integrity, patriotism and ability.”
