High Traffic
Feared For Holiday .
Fearing a repeat performance of the long Memorial Day weekend which cost Virginia 19 traffic deaths, Col. C. W. Woodson, Jr., Superintendent of State Police and Executive Chairman of the Governor’s Highway Safety Committee, today called upon motorists and pedestrams to make every allowance for very abnormal and dangerous traffic conditions during the coming Fourth of July Holiday.
“People must realize that traffic volumes will l>e even higher than during the Memorial Day weekend since vacationists are now pourhig into Virginia,” he said, “ and everyone on the road will l>e trying to cover as much ground in as little time as possible.”
Col. Woodson stressed the fact that this tendency leads not only to speeding under the worst possible conditions but the equally dangerous failings of driving while drinking, exhausted or sleepy. He added that the holiday_mood and—sight seeing— also are not conducive to the attentive driving called for by the situation. .
