Armed with 12-gauge shotguns on a free afternoon, Pfc. Perry Bailey, whose wife, Maynard, lives in Ranson/ Ky., and Pvt. Charles L. Williams, whose wife, Claudine, lives in Browntown, returned from their hunt with a dead enemy soldier and a wounded one. The two Reds had been flushed from their hiding place behind UN lines.
Bailey, formerly of Matewan, W. Va., and Williams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sandy Williams, Huntly, spotted the two infiltrators and at first mistook them for deer. Then, noticing the wariness of the intruders, they hurried to a nearby river bank to enlist the aid of several New Zealand soldiers who were digging sand.
Returning to the spot where they had spotted the Commies, the now reinforced hunting party wai met with hand grenades and more rifle fire. After a brief fire fight, the Chinese were bagged. . The following morning the adventurous cooks returned to their jobs in the mess hall, their day of combat behind them.
