He made millions out of railroading but in the process of making these millions he reduced the cost of moving a barren of flour a thousand miles to so small a sum that it hardly can be measured in a loaf of bread.
Had he given every dollar he made to the poor he could not have helped the world as much as he did by pushing our frontier westward to the fertile plains which meant cheap bread for almost the whole world.
