Hunters should realize that the numerous “posted” signs, forbidding hunting, are not signs of inhospitality, but are signs of definite concern by land-owners. Use of high-powered rifles present/1 a danger to workmen in fields or in woods. There have been too many stories of tragedies from high-powered rifles. Shots from some high-powered weapons in the hands of hunters are dangerous for a distance of two miles, and Rappahannock County is too thickly populated to allow such dangers to exist.
Some of the “posted” signs do not mean that no hunting is allowed, but when the hunter goes to get permission from the land-owner, he is permitted tp hunt as long as no highpowered weapon goes.
One hunter, in the Flint Hill neighborhood, spoke the situation very clearly: “I’m a deer hunter, myself, and I own a high-powered rifle, but I’m interested in seeing a law passed to out-law high-powered weapons in Rappahannock County. It’s too dangerous to allow one to be fired.”
With the deer season upon us, it is too late to pass legislation to protect citizens this year from highpowered rifles. Opinion in general expresses the belief that another year will find laws to eliminate this ■ hazard to workmen, to school children walking along the country roads, or to other hunters unseen but close enough to be within range of. highpowered guns.
