Take, for example, the 'man who said he wished something alive in his lonely apartment. A friend gave him a small aquarium containing six fish, two snails, plus seaweed, pebbles, and water. When the gift arrived, a proper place to . put same could not be found. Also, the donor’s taste in aquariums did not suit. Transfer to a Steuben bowl proved to be quarters too small. Result: the janitor’s wife has the .aquarium.
What makes folks like this? A fish is netted and a steer is butchered and we eat ’em, but if a cat climbs to the top of a tree to escape a frivolous dog, the taxpayers are delighted to pay the costs of a fire department summoned to rescue the unhappy creature. Once rescued, nobody will accept the poor thing as a gift; especially if she’s expectant.
