According to Dr. Shanholtz, there has been some opposition to fluoridation. Many of these accusations are so obviously false that they need no an-wcr. A sum mary of a few of -these assertions and facts follows:
Assertion: Fluorides in the public water supply may have harmful effects on human beings. For generations over 3,000,000 persons in' the U. S. have lieen drinking water which naturally contains much more fluoride than health authorities recommend. Exhaustive studies have "proven that the health oF these people has in no way been impaired and that their rate of tooth decay has consistently been much lower than in other areas.
Assertion: Fluoride is a poisonous substance found in rat poison and insecticides. In large amounts, fluorides are toxic both in humans and in animals. The recommended amount to be added to water supplies is neither toxic nor harmful. Chlorine is one of the most deadly gases ever known but it has been used for several years to purify drinking water.
Assertion: Fluorides cause or accelerate the growth of cancer. This misstatement stems from a cancer experiment conducted in Texas on a special strain of mice which were highly inbred for susceptibility to cancer. Public Health Service investigators and officials of the National Cancer Institute reported that the experiment produced no relationship between fluoridation and cancer development or growth.
