County’s First Lady Juror

Mr. Galley W. Smith, Jr., has served as the first woman juror in, Rappahannock county, serving as foreman on the case.
Mrs. Smith, following the regular form sent out to women in the county about a year ago, had agreed to serve if called. Sheriff J. W. Crilzer sent the notice several weeks ago, and when Mrs. Smith arrived at the Courthouse, she found herself as number 13 with 12 men chosen on the list of possible jurors. James W. Fletcher and Alfred M. Hickman, lawyers on the case at hand, failed to strike the woman juror, so she was named to serve. The jury of six included Henry Wood Virgil (Dutch) Updike, George Miller, Moffett Goud, and Mrs. Smith. The men named her as fore* man. The case involved payment for' a horse that had been boarded out on property and had died. The defendant was declared not guilty of negligence. * ,, M.
Mrs. Smith stated that she was most surprised when she found out that she was to be paid for her time. "I thought a citizen was supposed to do his duty in jury service,” was the lady’s reaction, “I never thought about being paid for it. I enjoyed the atudying and thinking connected with jury duty, *nd I’m glad I was asked”
