A city newspaper stated the plane “stalled at the top of a loop,” and “crashed in a field near Warrenton.” It is generally supposed that two stories became confused, since the crash was on the old road between Washington and Flint Hill. The “stalled at the top of a loop” gave the impression that the plane was stunting. Sheriff Critrer, who accompanied the Civil Aeronautics inspectors on their tour and heard the accounts of many eye-witnesses, can recall no witness saying anything about any looping the plane was doing.
The three victims were young men: Dean Hawley, Jr., 33; Kenneth Shaften, 32, and Joel Hill, 23. Shaften was a Lieutenant^Commander in the Navy, World War 11, and his funeral was held in Arlington National Cemetery Tuesday. The bodies of Hawley and Hill were taken to a crematory in Washington, D. C., Tuesday, and the ashes will be sent to their families in New York. Hawley and Hill were first cousins; their mothers were sisters.
