Should the new lawn be seeded to permanent grasses in the spring?
The answer to that question is "no" , says A. G. Smith, associate horticulturist at VPL
However, he has some alternate suggestions for this time of year : - -
Complete grading and soil preparation. Apply a low-nitrogen fertilizer such as 2-12-li2^ using 12 pounds to 1,000 square feet. Sow Korean lespedeza early, using about 1/3 the weight recommended for grass seed. Cut weeds before they go to seed.
In late summer cut lespedeza and remove hay. Apply a fertilizer high in nitrogen. Sow grass seed in the stubble. After the lespedeza hay dries, scatter it as a light mulch. Do not turn soil with spade or plow. Cowpeas may be used instead of lespe• deza. Another alternative: Instead of using legumes as the summer covering for the lawn, sow red top. Apply nitrogen fertilizer, then sow seed. Cut weeds before they go to seed. In the fall mow close to the ground, sweep loose grass off and apply a mixed fertilizer high in nitrogen. Sow grass seed. Do not turn soil with spade or plow. The horticulturist says crabgrass is an annual. It grows when the days are hot and long.
