■ OOP _'_ Therms a wonderful wjsecreck on one of Browning’s poems: a fellow started reading “Sordello” while convalescing after a severe illness, turned pale, and hoarsely whispered, “Woe is mef I’ni an idiot ! My health is restored, but my mind’s gone! 1 can’t understand two consecutive lines of an English poem.” Tlje only trouble is: I can't rememwho said it. That serves me right, for trying to make out I know something about poetry. Besides, there's a sight more fun in poetry when some fellow down at Amissville starts teasing the fire chief in rhyme. I can read that and get a kick out of it; there’s no need to think you should remember who wrote it (I couldn’t find out, even if I tried), and the sole purpose of such rhymes is to give pleasure
