NATIONAL SAFETY NEEDS SHOULD HAVE PRIORITY
Participation in a nation-wide television broadcast last week gave me an opportunity to point out the difficult choice now facing us of deciding how best to protect ourselves from atomic bomb attacks.
All military experts are agreed that the Russians have such bombs and and Air Force capable of dropping them in the United States . There is agreement too that we have no adequate defense now against such an attack.
The civil defense advocates are urging construction of bomb shelters to minimize the danger "of attack while military leaders urge that emphasis be placed on radar screens, interceptor planes and anti-aircraft gurts, including the new NIKE j<ftpropelled rocket which can reach any plane that Hies, is faster than any plane that flies and can follow the plane any way it may twist or dodge. A demonstration of its remarkable destructive power will be conducted this month in New Mexico. Either course will involve tremendous expeditures but either, in my opinion, would be better than the cheaper choice of assuming that the Russians never will start World War III and that we can, therefore, afford to cut defense appropriations to balance the national budget this year.
