Fort George G. Meade, MarylandPrivate Taylor W. Smoot, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs, Harvey Smoot, residing at Washington, has arrived at the 2053rd Army Reception Center here, where he will receive his initial indoctrinatkn^jnto the Army.
He will receive his uniform, be classified 5s to skills and aptitudes, and will be selected for that branch of the Army, for which he is best qualified. From here he will be sent to an Army installation for basic training in that branch of the Army for which he is selected: After basic training he will receive advanced training at installations of the Army Technical Services or schools; or he may be assigned to the Army Field Forecs. Red Apples Dominate
Market, Experts Say
The new red sports are taking over Virginia apple circles, the Virginia department of agriculture said today. The old time green apple that lived in a barrel is getting the bulldozer. The Department cast a generally approving eye on this change in apple fashions. It is most likely, the Department said, to please the consumer, who thinks an apple should be red. Moreover, the Department’s apple and peach tree survey shows that old, low-yielding orchards are being plowed under, which should hdp the industry catch up with the competition. Even the Albemarle Pippin, which tickled the palate of Queen Victoria years ago, is a casualty of the reds. The survey showed a 33 per cent decrease in this variety since 1949. It was the same story for Yorks, Staymans, Ben Davis and Winesaps, with reductions ranging from 13 to 24 per cent On the other hand, red strains of Rome Beauty were up 39 per cent, York Imperial reds 17 per cent red Staymans 4 per cent and Red Delicious nearly 8 per* cent since 1949.
