A large increase' in applications for public assistance during January was noted by Mrs. M. Elizabeth Buntin, Superintendent of the Rappahannock County Department of Public Welfare, as industrial areas in the state reported an increase in unemployment.
Welfare departments in Virginia reported a total of 4,737 applications for assistance in January, over 900 more than in the previous month. Applications in industrial areas were especially heavy, the Superintendent said.
In Rappahannock County, applications for January were 7, a decrease from 10 in December. The increase in applications was reflected in a large increase in the number of cases receiving assistance, especially in aid to dependent children cases and general relief maintenance. These are the assistance programs most directly affected by unemployment trends, the Superintendent ex_plained. Three hundred and thirty children in 100 families were added to the, dependent children aid program in January. An increase of 247 cases in general reljef was partly accounted for by 150 cases at the Norfolk City Municipal Hospital, who had not previously received public assistance funds.
