March and April, Dangerous Fire Months
The Virginia Forest Service warns the people of Virginia that March and April are usually the most hazardous months for extreme forest fire anger, more so than any other time of the year. District Forester Wilfong of * the Northern Piedmont Forest Service Disrict stated that one-third of all -forest fiFes-in Virginia are caused bysmokers and caifpers. They kill little trees . . . Destroy timber needed by industry .... Cause., soil erosion and floods ..... Spoil recreation and scenic areas .... Make poor hunting and fishing.
Wilfong also stated if everyone would follow the following suggestions while in or near the woods, the annual loss from forest fires iii Virginia would be reduced.
Break matches before throwing them away, Bury cigarettes butts and pipe heels, Douse campfires with water, Always use the ash tray in your car. Be extra careful with trash -fires, Use care in all - woods operations, Know and obey the local fire laws.
