Discusses Old Age
Assistance
More than half of the persons receeiving Old Age Assistance in Virginia are seventy-five years old or older, and ten per cent are over eighty-five, Mrs. M. Elizabeth Buntin Superintendent of the Rappahannock County Welfare department .reported today. •These and other facts concerning Old Age Assistance client were brought out in a study of this part of the public assistance program just released by the Department of Welfare and Institutions, the Superintendent said.
The .study found that requirement of old people were greater in metropolitan areas, where rents were greater, and city residents had more cash income available, but rural residents had more “income in kind,” and more toital income. Cash and other income are considered in making old age assistance grants, the Superintendent said.
Throughout the state, the average recipient of Old Age Assistance had total income of $13.11, about onethird of what was considered his basic need. Assistance payments averaged $26.55, about 61 per cent of the requirements, leaving an average of about ten per cent, or $4.25, unmet by any source. Half of these on the rolls, evep with the payments from old age assistance, have less than enough to meet their basic minimum needs.
