Although all the shooting at signs is not done by hunters, this type of damage increases during the hunting season. The Council’s survey disclosed that 20 percent of the sign replacements are due to gunshot damage during late winter, spring and summer. This figure, however, jumped to 40 percent during and following the fall hunting season. Adolescents with rifles account for part of the damage throughout the year.
The greatest damage to highway signs occurs on rural roads where apprehension is least likely. And because 66 percent of the highway signs are located in open country, important warning signs are three times as likely to be shot as are route markers, destination, and regulatory signs. Sometimes the warning signs are so mutilated that they are illegible and serious accidents could result.
Damaging public property Is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine up to $600 and a maximum of 12 months in jail.
