Even with careful handling, shrinkage has been a problem. Spots and stains do not seem to come out much easier than on garments without a special finish. Water resistant finish needs to be applied after each cleaning.
Loss of color and linting are troublesome. Special cleaning methods are necessary for satisfactory results. The leather cannot be cleaned the same way as woven or knitted garments.
Color change is usually to a darker shade, caused by mechanical action in cleaning which lifts the pile on the surface, or by abrasion, rubbing or faction while the garment is being worn. Some areas of the garments become darker while others which do not receive the friction remain the original color. Linings sometimes give way during the first cleaning. Check labels as to service of lining. Some are guaranteed for the life of the garment.
Miss Johnson says to consider the additional cost of care and upkeep of leather garments before you decide to include them in the family wardrobe. Remem bet the possibility of shrinkage and color change. Read the label carefully. Do some comparative shopping.
