BILL OF RIGHTS DAY DESERVES RECOGNITION
0n« of the mor* important date* in American history—an an* niversary that has never been given the attention it rightfully deserve*—is December 16, the date of the final ratification of the Ant lo amendments to the Constitution of the United States, more commonly known as .the Bill of Bights. ■» It was on December 16, 1781, that these amendments were finally adopted by the 13 state* and became a part of our basic law— putting down in black and whit* certain “inaliienable rights" over which the war of the Revolution was fought and which many of our forefather* considered a serious omission in the original Constitution itself. .t ■ Actually this date is more important in our history than some of the other anniversaries we do remember. Furthermore, our Bill of Rights should mean even more to Americans today than it did 162 year* ago, for contained in those first 10 amendments are the bask rights of frep men (that w* take more or less for granted) but Which are denied all those under ‘Communist rule.
Few, if any, American* could enumerate all 10 amendment*. All know that they include the right of freedom of speech, press and religion, the right to peaceful assembly and to petition the government for redress of grievances, but how many know that all these bask rights are included in the first amendment alone?
