The son of John Albert Compton and Sarah Frances (Brown) Compton, Ur. "Compton was born in Washington in 1882. He was married to Hiss Eva C. Hudson of Staunton in 1918. Mrs. Compton died in 1924. In 1929 he married Miss Bertha Hudson in Washington, D.C., and moved to his old home town the following year.
For many years Mr. Compton traveled for Lamb Brothers Clothiers of Baltimore. In Washington he opened a general merchandise store, known popularly as ‘'Compton’s Store".
Mr. Compton was a long standing member of the Washington Methodist Church. He succeeded his father as steward and served his church in this capacity for 28 years.
A member of Washington Lodge No. 78, AJF.AAAI., Mr. Compton was supervisor of the Washington Masonic Cemetery.
Funeral services were held at the home near Washington Friday morning, with the Reverend A. D. Ooodson.officiating. He was assisted by the Reverend J. Aubrey Hughes, District’Superinten- ' dent of the Charlottesville District of the Methodist Church, and the ' Reverend John Divers. Burial was in Staunton at 1 p.m. •
Mr. Compton is survived by hie wife, Bertha Hudson Compton; a sister, Miss Margaret Compton of Washington, and a brother, Ernest Compton of Tampa, Florida.
Active pallbearers for the burial were Lester Burke, Upton Weakley, Gilbert Updike, Mahlon Ramey, Clarence Giles and Guy Lillard.
Among the out-of-town friends and relatives attending the last rites were Mrs. Katie Compton (a sister-in-law) of Collingdale, Pa.; W. E. Compton (a nephew) of Secane, Pa; Mrs. Allen Compton (a niece) of flwarthmore, Pa.; Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Mason of Inray; Otis R.
