A Highway Department spokesman said that if the weather is favorable during the next month or six weeks, 25 or 30 projects may be completed or opened to traffic this year. Among these are the $900,000 Lexington by-pass, and four-lane construction on US 29-211 in Fauquier county near Warrenton. Because of approaching winter, the final bituminous surfacing on some jobs cannot be applied until spring.

Other projects nearing completion include divided highway construction on US 340-522 between Front Royal and Winchester,'on US 60 west of Richmond and on Route 165 at Norfolk, reconstruction of Route 16 over Brushy Mountain between Sugar Grove and Marion, and the rebuilding of Route 42 from Churchville to Buffalo Gap in Augusta County.

To prepare for winter, highway maintenance forces have readied snow and ice removal equipment and jire stockpiling thousands of tons of chlorides and abrasives, such as sand and cinders, for use on slippery road sur!****• The road agency opened bids October 10 on 18,500 tons of sodiuin and calcium chloride which will be used to combat ice and snow.
