Social Security News'

For Farm Operators

Farm operators will pay a .social security tax for themselves for the first time early in 1956. when they file their Federal jincome tax return for the year 1955, sccoi'StnR to Mr. Robert E. Poisons, Assistant Manage^ of thy Alexandria Social Security OfFifce. Farm operators as well j as other self-employed individuals j are covered under social security if they have a net income of at least $400 in a year. J

There will be cases where a selfemployed individual will owe a social security tax, but jwill opt owe an income tax. These cases will be where the individual h^s a net income of at least $400, but did not receive sufficient! income during the year to owe an incomje tax. However, it will be recessary that they file a Federal incomje tax form lit order to pay the social security tax. There lire two methods by which a farm operator may figure his net income. Iir a farmer has a gross incjome or $1800 or less, he may use ihis actual net income, or he majr claim one-half his gross as his come. If a farmer has a come of more than $1 must figure his actual come for social security purposes only. The Social Security Administration has a pamplet which ex-i plains this in further detail and; also gives information on the benefits provided under the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance system. A copy will be furnished on request.

Mr. Parsons is in Washington the fourth Wednesday 0# each month in the Court Housje and may be contacted for assistance in filing claims for social Security benefits, and for general information on the social security program.
