l The use of the combine to harvest corn is in the future for farmers as a result of widespread experimental and development work of a farm equipment manufacturer, report agricultural engineers at Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
Two types of corncob mix,! as well as shelled corn, can now be harvested with a selfpropelled combine, with few adjustments and modifications needed to deliver whole kernel or cracked kernel corncob mix to the grain tank. With one adjustment a combine shells the corn, breaks the cob into pieces about one inch long, and elevates the mix to the grain tank. By another set of adjustments, it cracks the kernels and breaks the cobs into smaller pieces. Harvesting corncob mix with a combine has several economic advantages, the engineers say. The feeder can harvest high-moisture corn at ideal moisture range of 25 to 30 per cent, when field losses are lowest and feeding value of the corn is highest. Being able to harvest all possible crops with one basic machine has an obvious advantage-it reduces the need for machinery and spreads fixed costs over more acres. .
