official name of cottontail. Molly cottontail being prolific breeds early and often enough each season to enable the species to sustain severe losses and still quickly bounce back to abundance. The rabbit lives out his life in a small area and does not wander far from his birthplace. When jumpedand pursued he circles back to the spot from which Jumped and the hunter and his beagles cash in on this habit for their fun. The beagle is not a fast dog and the cottontail has no difficulty maintaining a safe distance. So pursued he runs a small circle and the hunter who stations himself close to the starting point will most likely bag the bunny. The choice of the proper hunting arm is not difficult— just about any type and gauge of shotgun will do the job.And even the 22 rifle and the bow and arrow are sometimes brought into the act. For the scattergun size 6 shot is the usual recommendation, although many sportsmen use sizes 7 1/2 or 8 so they will not have to change loads when shifting from rabbits to quail. Owning a pack of registered beagles is a real pleasure in itself. They are not expensive to keep and their friendly dispositions and small size make them ideal family pets as well as hunting dogs. Many experienced rabbit hunters, however, prefer a hound with mixed blood in his veins.
