It looks like relatively smooth sailing ahead for beef cattle producers. In their annual look-ahead at the farm economy, agricultural economists at Virginia Polytechnic Institute see herd expansion taking place at a fairly moderate rate nearly equal to increases in consumer demand. As long as this continues, relatively constant prices are expected for both feeder calves and fed cattle. Producers will have likewise steady returns in feeding operations.
