A federal court sitting in Alexandria last week ordered the state of Virginia to redis— rict its legislative and senator* ial districts on grounds that the counties of Arlington and Fairfax, as well as the city of Norfolk are being grossly discriminated against in representation in the General Assembly.
It declared further that the redistricting enacted by the General Assembly in session early this year was unconstitutional in that it did not provide several areas with large populations enough representation.
The court specified Jan. 81, 1963 as the deadline when the redistricting should be completed. Otherwise it will enter such an order as may be necessary to carry out the decree.
The general assembly at its session this year enacted what has been termed a "token” redistricting act. It took three House seats from Southwest Virginia and gave one each to Fairfax and Virginia Beach, and Princess Anne County with some other shuffling. It is declared now as not being enough.
