ine Rappahannock Panthers extended their winning record 2-0 against Warden County Friday night. The SJV Panthers downed the ( Wildcats 23-15 while the Varsity squeezed by the .Wildcats Varsity 48-46 in i$if*'«rtime.,. «• vw*„
The junior Varsity led by 4-2 at the end of the first quarter and increased their lead to 9-4 at the end of the first half with Gary Gilkey scoring 7 of the 9 points. In the third quarter the Panthers doubled the output of the Wildcats 8-4, but was outscored 7-6 in the final period. In the Varsity game, the Panthers and Wildcats were engaged in a nip and tuck battle with neither team increasing a lead of 4 points throughout the game. The lead exchanged hands several times and was not finally decided until at the end of a 3 minute overtime period.
Both teams shot exceptionally well in the first quarter with the Panthers emerging out front 14-12. The visitors from Warren County increased their scoring output by adding 14 points in the second quarter as the Panthers added 10 for a halftime score of 26-24 in favor of the Wildcats. Again the Wildcats outscored the Panthers 9-8 in the third quarter and were leading by 44-42 with 21 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, as Roger Welch sank two important free throws to knot the score at 44-44.
