Eighteen of 24 students ! selected for a new University I of Virginia program to produce college teachers are Virginians. The students, who have been designated University Scholars, were drawn from the top of the present third-year class In. the College of Arts and Sciences. Among these students is Edgar K. Browning of Flint Hill, son of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Browning and a student in Economics. He is a 1961 graduate of Rappahannock County High School, and was valedictorian of his class. ‘They are representative of the very best students in the University," said Dr, Edward Younger, director of the program and history department chairman. ‘The basic purpose of the program Is to relieve the present and expected college teacher shortage and to attract outstanding students into the profession.” Known as the ‘Three-year Master's Degree Program,” it is being supported by a $243,000 Ford Foundation crranf.
