Feeding Forages

Recommendations of feeding' today are far different from what they used to be. For years I recommended 20 lbs. of mixed hay per dry beef cow, or 25 lbs. for a beef cow suckling a calf. Also we used to say 3 lbs. corn silage equals 1 lb. hay in feed value. These general recommendations were once sound; back when we had good growing sesaons, wide margin of profit and before forage analysis was available. The cowmen who follows even 1962-63 recommendations for feeding this winter will go broke and fast. Costs are higher, values of marketable product lower. In fact a 5% error in management didrnt amount to much several years ago...today this comparatively small percent of error could mean a great deal in the reduction in net for management. We are now finding there is a great deal of difference in the feed value of the same kind of forages even when
