Knowledge of third grade arithmetic hits home doesn’t it? Whafs protein worth today. ..$85.00 for 41% was a recent price quoted by Lee Thornton. Lee added, "its gone up but I don't know present price, but the above suffices for our point. This figures around 10.40 per pound of total protein, or 12.60 per pound of digestible protein. Thus the grass hay sample #2 above is worth $12.60 per ton more than sample #1 on a digestible protein basis. Yet most farmers would pay $30.00 per ton for sample No. 1 before they would pay $42.60 for the same kind of hay when actually one would be just as good a buy as the other. Farmers are not to blame..the reason is simply a case of not having forage analysis available in years past; no accurate figures to base a decision upon. Our farmers are catching on though, and but fast! - -
