A Rappahannock native son came through a close political race for the State Senate a winner, when Senator Curry Carter edged his opponent Winston B. Wine by a narrow 212 votes, for the seat in the Staunton area. Senator Carter had received the support of the important newspapers in his area and the backing of the Democratic organization with full recommendation by former Representative Burr P. Harrison, in a warm tribute at a rally during the final stages of the close election. A run down on the down-to' the-wire 7,163,951 ballot battle shows how really close the race was with the unofficial count showing that Senator edged Mr. Wine by 101 in Staunton and just 91 votes separated them in Waynesboro. The Bath County vote went for Senator Carter 583424 arid in Highland County only 21 votes decided the issue. In Augusta County Mr. Wine won out by 160 votes and the two men split the magisterial districts, 3-3 as Senator Carter scored in Pastures, Riverheads, and South River and Mr. Wine took Beverly Manor Middle River and North River. Senator Carter, was first elected to the Senate seat in 1948 and has served on most of the committees. During the last session he was Chariman of the Committee on Agricultural, Mining and Manufacturing but his most important work is on the Finance committee which not only must plan revenue-raising but also functions as appropriation committee of the upper house. The editorial in the Staunton News-Leader the Sunday before the election stated "Sen.
