* shipment of Virginia soybeans. • In instances where the toxic is found, a shipment must be seized and re-cleaned before it can be delivered. This means extra expense*to the farmer or grain handler. Under federal and state pure food regulations, it is unlawful to sell or offer for sale as food for animal or human consumption beans or grain containing crotalaria seed. The toxic seed has virtually no tolerhnce. *1 The Virginia Department of Agriculture offers these suggestions: • «>?' ; If you have not harvested yet, take extra care to avoid mixing the crotalaria seed. Crotalaria plants can be recognized by their bright yellow blooms. The seed pods resemble huge garden pea pods and are usually easily seen. The kidney shaped seed ranges in color from a light green in the immature stage to dark brown or black at maturity. The seed is about a tenth the size of a kernel of corn. Before selling, it is important to find out if beans or grain are contaminated. They can be cleaned at considerably less expense before shipment.
