The ^im of every commercial cow^alf man should be tti winter his beef cows at the least cost that will still enable him to raise healthy vigorouls calves. You can’t starve a dollar out of a cow - neither can you expect to show a profit by over feeding. Particularly this year!
Before taking a sharpe look at cow rations, let’s take a quick look at other things that can affect the cost of the winter feed bill.
Get rid of the lice before it turns cold. It costs enough to feed a cow without feeding the lice to boot. Spray with Co-Ral, or spray twice (14 days apart) with Methoxchlor, Malathion, or one of the other recommended sprays. DDT is against the law.
Cull off the shy breeder, poor milker, and aged cows. Seriously consider having the veterinarian pregnancy test your herd. He can tell if a cow is safe with calf anytime after 60 days. Cost should run from $.50 to $1.00 per head for this service provided you have 30 or more cows and are set up to handle them efficiently.
Worm all weaned calves. Make full use of straw, corn stubble, and honeysuckle. .Be on the lookout for vitamin A shortage.
Balance poor quality rations wit a protein supplement. Makes feed go farther and makes for healthier animals.
Keep a close eye on your animals and dole out feed according to their condition.
The following rations are suggested as a guide. They will need to be adjusted to fit the conditions on your farm, such as, size of cows, condition going into winter, time of calving, quality of feed, and amount of gleanings.
