4-H Boys Attend

Shearing School ~ *

George Powers, Wayne Sutphin $nd Nelson Putnam attended the 4-H Sheep Shearing School held at Culpeper Enterprises on May 6th under the sponsorship of the V. P. I. 'Extension Service and the Sunbeam Corporation. During the morning, instruction in the fine points of sheep shearing was given by Mr. Ed Warner of Sunbeam and Dr. George W. Litton, Head of the V.P.I. 'Animal Science Department, who were assisted by county agents of Northern Virginia. Sheep were furnished by Mr. Ed Duncan of Culpeper, who expressed his appreciation for the help the school was to him however not every one is willing to chance his sheep being shorn at the hand of-the totally inexperienced; all of us are grateful to Mr. Duncan for his co-operation. In late afternoon a shearing contest was held with the more experienced shearers competing. Dr. Litton and Mr. Warner were judges whi 1 e county agents kept time on individual shearers. Scores are based on: times (20); absence of second cuts in fleece (20); condition of fleece (20); method of handling sheep (15); absence of cuts on sheep (15); appearance of shorn sheep (10). Each contestant sheared two sHf»ep. Placings, including scores and home county were as follows: 1st Jimmy Miller - 91.05 Loudon; 2nd Garland Shackelford - 90.3 Stafford; 3rd George Powers - 85.75 Rappahannock; 4th Robert Miller - 85.25, also of Loudon; 5th Kenneth Lenherr - 83.3 of Fluvanna; 6th Wendell Green -82.8 Spottsylvania; and 7th Wayne Dllman - 75.8, also of Stafford.
