Demonstration
John Amos, Extension Bee Specialist from VPI, conducted spring swarm manage ment demonstrations in the county on Thursday morning at the H. B. Wood place in Woodville. This entailed check Ing hives to determine whether or not they needed to be combined because of having become weakened from lack of food. There was a very light honey flow last year resulting from the drought. He also checked to see if bees needed feeding now until there is more nectar available. This is done by giving them a solution of sugar and water. Strength and quality of Queen was checked to see if hives needed requeening. He checked to destroy drone cells. Anyone who wishes to see Mr. Amos transfer bees from one hive to another may attend the demonstration which he will give Friday, May 15 at L. J. Kilbys. Mr. Amos will return to the county in September to demonstrate ways of putting bees to bed for the winter. This is normally done by keepers in October and November. Before opening a hive Mr. Amos smoked the bees. This tends to make them gorge themselves on honey so they are quiet when the hive is
