Virginia has been blessed with abundant and diverse water resources many of which have been wisely managed and used, but some have been expolited and somer remain unused. Education and coordinated efforts of groups can best achieve maximum effectiveness in using water resources. An exhaustive inventory of alL, mineral and rock deposits must be made and we must protect the future of the coal industry and other mineral industries, according to Or. Byron N. Cooper, head of the V. P. I. geology department. The Virginia Division of Forestry along with federal forest agencies, forest - industries and associations have worked 50 years to insure the protection, development, and sound use of Virginia's forest resources. Great progress has been made, but much remains to be done. Better management for. 12 1/2 million acres in the hand of small owners, finding diversified markets and industries for f op* est products, multiple use for forest lands are some of the important problems remaining.
The economy of the Commonwealth is closely related to the valuable marine resources, which encompass 13,000 sq. miles of marine water and 4,000 statute miles of shoreline, beaches, and mar shlaods* ^ The growirig populations and : its demand for outdoor recreation will put pressure on the wildlife resources. Efforts and regulations must be directed toward getting maximum recreation for each animal harvested. While game to hunter ratio is still sufficient to allow liberal limits and seasons, pressure in public hunting areas is most acut^ If the recreational output from - these areas can be increased at a sufficient rate, we should be able to maintain quantity as well as quality’in hunting and fishing for a long time to come.
