Mrs. Updike Named
To Town Council
Mrs. Virgil Updike attended her first meeting of the Town Council of the Town of Washington as an acting member on Tuesday night. She had been elected on a write-in in June with the other members but had not attended the organiza tional meeting in September | since she had not qualified and was unable to attend the I October meeting due to sickness. Her mother, Mrs. Alice Verper has served the council as a member and clerk before moving to Suffolk and a relative William Compton (Mr. Willie) had served as Mayor for many years. At that time, her father.' in-law, Cleveland Updike had been clerk so it seems that Mrs. Updike is well steeped in the tradition of service to the town. The budget for the coming year was discussed and will be up for final passage at the next meeting. ,
The Council voted to spon sor the Christmas door de corating contest this year to promote interest in making the town more attractive during the holidays and to point up safety through fire prevention. Judging will take place on Saturday/December 26 between 7 and 9 p.m. Those with exterior decorations lighted at that time will be considered and in addition to residents, town water users will also he eligible for the contest
