The statewide bear kill may drop sharply from last year’s record kill of 380. Early reports indicate a poor or spotty acorn crop compared to last year’s bumper supply. Since the bear kill usually rises and falls with the annual acron crop, the bear harvest this year is expected to drop to around 200 animals. Based on early season spot checks, squirrel hunting success seems to be poor to fair in northern Virginia, good in the central mountain and southern Tidewater sections and fair in the southwest. The reported spotty mast crop will probably make success vary widely. Grouse-hunters can look to a substantial improvement over the poor season last year. Grouse populations above aver age are reported from all Virginia mountain counties.
