Purchases Total
Purchases of pulpwood grown in Virginia and delivered to pulp and paper! mills during 1963 totaled $39,802,000, it was reported by H. J. Malsberger of Atlanta, general manager of the Southern Pulpwood Conservation Association. Last year’s total for the state, he said, was five percent higher than the value of $37,880,000 recorded for 1962 deliveries. These figures were based on the’results of a 12-state pulpwood production survey made by the U. S. Forest Service Experiement Stations in Asheville,N. C., and New Orleans, La., in cooperation with SPC A.
Among the 94 counties in Virginia where pulpwood was produced, the three leading counties, and the value of deliveries shipped from each, were Buckingham, $1,522,540; Sussex, $1,202,300; and Bruns' wick, $1,098,700. Virginia’s share in the production of wood raw material for the pulp and paper industry was part of an all-time high pulpwood harvest for the South as a whole. •
