Don't use plant material from your vegetable garden for a compost pile on that same garden, advises W. H. Lyne, county agent with the Virginia Agricultural Extension Service. “Organisms that cause many of the vegetablediseases plaguing home gardeners live during the winter in diseased plant refuse," Lyne points out. He says that the best time to clean up a garden is in the fall. This is the time, he adds, to carry out proper sanitary measures.
