Forest Fires At

The Division of Forestry reports that 106 forest fires burned 327.30 acres of forest land in the sixteen county northern piedmont district to date for this year. In Rappahannock County two fires have burned 5.00 acres of forest land. This year the fire danger wa6 low on many days during the critical months of February, March, and April. During these months, a good supply of moisture kept the forest fuel moist on many of the windy days. The Division of Forestry fire danger weather station, located in Charlottesville, recorded the following rainfall in the first four months of 1965. January 3.41, February 5.36, March4.09 and April-2.88.
Compliance with the brushburning law is on the increase however. Thirty cases were brought to court in the district during the period of March 1st to May 15th. Other major causes are careless s m o ke r s andchildren playing with matches.
