National Hospital
To Be Observed
National Hospital Week, an education event sponsored by the American Hospital Association and observed by hospitals throughout the United States, is May 9-15.
“A hospital is a flexible and dynamic institution, responding and reacting to changing health needs of the community,” says John Phillips, administrator of Culpeper Memorial Hospital. “National Hospital Week provides an opportunity for the community to learn more about the hospital services maintained to guard and restore health,” Phillips adds. An average of one in every .seven persons requires hospitalization each year. “This means that every person in the community has a vested interest in the hospital and it behooves everyone to become familiar with the hospital, its services and its objectives,” advises Phillips. What do a nurse and purchasing agent have in common? For one thing, you are likely to find them both working in a hospital. These are just two of the occupations representative of the divergent skills required in Culpeper Memorial Hospital to maintain patient care. In fact, hospital occupations run from (Accountant to X-ray technologist), with some 150 in between.
“The day when the doctor and nurse were the only people needed in a hospital has long passed,” Phillips says. “They are still needed in full measure, but they are assisted by many other specially educated and trained people who contribute to total patient care.”
