The Rappahannock National Bank in Washington paid the town $1952.46 in taxes on May 12, 1965. This was inpayment of taxes assessed against its stockholders by the town at the rate of 80 cents on each one hundred dollars of taxable value of the shares of stock assignable to the Town of Washington under Code Section 58476.2 of the Acts of the General Assembly. According to Mayor Dorothy C. Davis this was the largest amount the Rappahannock Na* tional had ever paid androuglr ly twice the amount that they paid in 1950 when she first assumed the duties of mayor. She further stated that last year the bank tax accounted for half of the $2,000 budget and the grant-in-aid of the ABC profits, allocated accord" ing to population for the other half. She pointed out that the town government does not have the authority to levy property taxes unless the budget exceeds the income and that the citizenry had rather have a minimum of services than the additional ones that would require added tax money.
