New Interest in
Old Graveyards
An ever widening search foi historical data was given new impetus Sunday by the Cemetery Committee of Rappahannock Historical Society. Tc ' discover the past this groui believes the starting place it with the men and families who lived here. With this ii mind Dr. Wm. Wake and E M. Jones led a four car research party out #628, Ol< Fodder Stack Road to pa? visits to three of the oldes graveyards containing the re mains of several of the note< families who arrived here ii the late 1700’s. The Commit tee collected accurate dat; from the stones and James R Johnson photographed the sites of the Alfred Dearing (1791-1856), James Moore (1795-1882), and Braxtor Eastham (1805-1888) cemeteries.
Arrangements had beer made ahead of time with the families now owning the properties for the Historical Corr mittee visit. Everyone on the trip was pleased with the reception and courtesies giver by the Menefees, the Moores, and the Pullens. The Cemetery Committee extends a note oi praise to these families for their loving care for these old burial sites. All of thenr were firmly in place and the grass and shrubs recently trimmed. These patriarchia! families would have been mosi grateful had they known thai after more than a century ant a half the people took suet interest and care of their final resting places. Mr. Wm. Pullen had done considerable restoration oi the old Dearing plot. He pointed out that the wall of very heavy stone was probably buili in the first years of the Dearing occupancy circa 1810, anc it was constructed like the fine old walls of Scotland.
