Week Begins May 23

Soil Stewardship Week begins Sunday, May 23, with many ministers speaking on this subject, W. H. Lyne, county agent with the Virginia Agricultural Extension Service, said today. Mr. Lyne said that the entire week beginning May 23 will be known as National Soil Steward ship Week. Sponsors of the event are the Soil and Watei Conservation districts all over America. May 23 is also known as Rogation Sunday, which always occurs on the fifth Sunday after Easter, said Lyne. Since the Fifth Century, the three Rogation Days following Rogation Sunday have been marked by fasting and litanies and, in some places, processions to 1 obtain God’s blessing on the 1 crops. According to the county ageni 1 “Productive soil is God's most 1 priceless gift to man. It is the one tangible gift without which neither animals nor plants can * survive.
