Bells Ring 4th
In Rappahannock
Bells rang out the message of liberty in the Town of Washington on Sunday, July 4th in the tried and true tradition that the Liberty Bell established in Philadelphia 189 years ago when it first proclaimed American independence.
Sounds readily identified were the Rappahannock Courthouse bell, Washington Baptist Church bell, Methodist Church bell. Trinity Episcopal bell, First Baptist Church bell and way off in the distance Mr6. Jesse L. Ward's farm bell and numerous child dren ringing all kinds and types of bells. Patriotic organizations spon sored this bell-ringing program on Independence Day throughout the nation to reemphasize the patriotic observance of the day which in recent years has become a time of highway slaughter. They have pointed out that the inscription on the first Liberty Bell is a verse from Leviticus 25:10 'Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof”. Rappahannock County citizens have reason to show pride in the Independence Day activities that featured the early Rappahannock Textile exhibit sponsored by the newly organized Historical Society at the Library and the fireworks display so kindly provided by Mr. and Mrs. William Carriganas the grand finale of the day.
