Price Outlook

(This is the way prospects for Virginia farm prices looked to the Virginia Dept, of Agriculture on Friday. The Department offers it to one can predict prices and be right farmers with the warning that no all the time.)

If egg prices follow their usual seasonal pattern, look for a short dip early in July caused by a temporary change in consumer buying habits due to increased vacation activities. Prices should then show some improvement towards the end of the month and continue to move up seasonally. Although egg supplies will show a rapid seasonal decline during the next few weeks, July supply is expected to remain at about last year’s level.

Farm prices last week in (Virginia were: grade A large eggs mostly 30-31 cents and mediums 26-1/2-27-1/2. Large white eggs in New York were 31-1/2-34 cents and mediums 28 1/2-30 cents. July supplies of broilers are expected to continue at around 9 per cent above a year ago, which is somewhat higher than the usual increase over the preceding year. However, due to the high prices of competing meats broilers are expected to have a better preference position in the consumer market--this may act to prevent any further price decline. Farm prices last week in Virginia were mostly 15-1/2 cents, and in DelMarVa they were mostly 15-1/2-15.9cents. Prices in Georgia and North Carolina were 14-1/2 cents with contract sales in both states up to 1-3/4 cents higher.
